A Mechanical Model for the Rapid Body Flexures of Fast-starting Fish
نویسندگان
چکیده
To understand the mechanical behavior of fast-starting fish, we modeled the pumpkinseed sunfish, Lepomis gibbosus, as a longitudinally-loaded beam that behaves as an elastic column eccentrically-loaded by lateral musculature. Since bending moments are a function of the shape of the body, we used real sunfish to determine, (1) from cross-sections, the effective moment arm of the lateral musculature, and, (2) from high speed video, the points about which the body bends. Since electromyography of faststarting fish revealed simultaneous activation of both sides of the lateral musculature in stage 1 of a Ctype start, we used this pattern to model the internal forces from which the reactive loads were determined. The model predicts that fast-starting sunfish produce a standing wave of bending moment posteriorly that then becomes a traveling wave of bending moment moving caudally from the anterior region. At the time of the standing moment wave, the body reaches its maximal effective flexural stiffness and, as a result, would be able to rapidly transmit bending moments along the body axis.

A new method for venom extraction from venomous fish, Green Scat
Scatophagus argus argus (Green Scat) is a pretty aquarium fish. Its hard spines are venomous and can cause painful injury. In this study 60 specimens of Green Scat were collected periodically from coastal waters of Boushehr (south of Iran) from May 2011 to April 2012. Anatomical features of venomous spines were investigated. Scat venom was extracted from the spines in a new manner for keeping t...

Background: The aim of this work was to study the feasibility of constructing a fast thorax model suitable for simulating lung motion due to respiration using only one CT dataset. Materials and Methods: For each of six patients with different thorax sizes, two sets of CT images were obtained in single-breath-hold inhale and exhale stages in the supine position. The CT images were then ...
متن کاملOpercular jetting during fast-starts by flatfishes
When attacked by predators, flatfishes perform fast-starts that result in a rapid take-off from the ocean bottom on which they lie. High-speed video recordings of the blind side of flatfishes indicate that they expel a coherent jet of water from the blind-side opercular valve during take-off. Buccal pressure recordings in winter flounder (Pseudopleuronectes americanus) show that a buccal pressu...

In many industrial equipment such as boilers and heat exchangers, the cylindrical tubes are exposed to the gas- liquid two phase flow. For any immersed body in flow field vortex shedding is created with a frequency that may be constant or variable, according to conditions such as flow rates, geometry of body, and etc. The failure will happen in the equipment, when this frequency is close to...
